Apple to close iPhone security loophole used by police to access devices

Better late than never may be an apt expression to describe Apple's recent decision to finally join the rest of the premium smartphone industry and adopt the USB Type-C port for charging and connectivity.

The update isn't meant to hold back law enforcement efforts, Apple said Wednesday, but to close a security hole that put customers at risk.

Apple has said it will change iPhone settings to block a method used by police and intelligence agencies to break into devices. What's more, Apple reportedly told Reuters, some of its customers live in countries where police take possession of phones whenever they want. USB-C has the functionality of Lightning but in a connector that works across different platforms. "We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs".

"We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product", a company spokesman wrote in the statement. In a case that made plenty of headlines in 2016, it refused to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation get into a phone that mass shooter Syed Rizwan used before he and his wife killed 14 people and wounded 22 others in San Bernardino, California.

The FBI didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple has been at the forefront of a battle between tech companies and law enforcement to hand over data in extreme cases. In March, an inspector general for the Justice Department found that federal law enforcement officials "did not pursue all possible avenues" to break into the iPhone at the heart of the San Bernardino attack.

If you're too young to remember when Apple changed their iPhone and iPad chargers from the big chargers to the lightening cables then good for you because it was harrowing. The change, which is live in the iOS 12 public beta and will reportedly be included in a "forthcoming general release", limits access to the Lightning port when a device is locked.
