Animal stuck on high-rise ledge becomes social media star

Raccoon Scaling St. Paul Skyscraper Sets Off Social Media Firestorm

A raccoon that was apparently stranded on a skyscraper in Minnesota is now on the move after officials tried to rescue it, reports WCCO.

An effort to build a makeshift ramp for it to climb down didn't work and the spooked raccoon instead made its way to the UBS Tower and began going up.

By midafternoon, the raccoon had ventured an additional 10 stories up, its claws somehow digging in enough to continue.

No word yet on how crews plan to get it down.

On Tuesday, the raccoon slowly scaled the UBS building, reaching the 23rd floor as its legend grew on social media with every floor it climbed.

Nearby Minnesota Public Radio branded the raccoon with the hashtag #MPRraccoon, and it was soon trending on Twitter.

By Tuesday afternoon local time, it had stopped on a ledge more than 20 stories high.

According to CBS News Minnesota, live traps have been set on the roof of the UBS building and rescuers are hoping to lure the celebrity raccoon to safety with food. By late Tuesday morning, the critter was spotted a few stories up on a window ledge, its brownish body just a smudge on the building's concrete and mottled stone exterior.

Laurie Brickley, St. Paul Department of Safety and Inspection spokesperson confirmed traps are on the roof, ready for the raccoon.

"Pray for #mprraccoon", one Twitter user said.

There wasn't much St Paul Animal Control could do because a rescue mission would be too risky for both the raccoon and the workers.

"We've been told that the building has live traps on the roof and are trying to get him to go up there", the law firm wrote.
