$273 mn in valuables seized in Malaysia's ex-PM Najib Razak probe

Police seize £200m including cash, jewellery and handbags linked to ex-Malaysia PM

Cash, jewelry, luxury handbags and other items worth up to £206 million have been uncovered in police raids linked to Malaysia's former prime minister, Najib Razak, Sky News reports.

Including other items such as handbags and watches, the total value of items seized are estimated to be between RM900 million and RM1.1 billion, said Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Amar Singh Ishar Singh.

Jewelry worth $110 million was also seized, including thousands of necklaces, rings, tiaras, bangles and earrings.

12,000 items of jewelry with an estimated retail value of €140-187 million.

He said the seizures were the biggest in Malaysian history.

Najib, who established 1MDB in 2009, denies any wrongdoing.

The former prime minister's wife, Rosmah Mansor, became a target for public anger during his leadership due to her vast collection of handbags and jewels, and her reported love of overseas shopping trips.

Of the RM116 million in cash, there were 26 different currencies.

Mr Najib told Reuters last week that the public seizure of handbags and other luxury items has created a negative perception, but that majority were gifts to his wife Rosmah Mansor and daughter Nooryana Najwa, and had nothing to do with 1MDB.

"We hope there is a chance that they will be evaluated and we can draw a conclusion on the source of the items and be able to get clarifications on the goods that the police had seized", he said when interviewed at the portal office here yesterday.

He said this would be part of their next move after the police concluded their appraisal of items seized from several properties linked to the former prime minister.

While police had seized 284 boxes and 72 big bags containing money, jewellery and watches from the premises to be analysed and valued, 25 bags out of the 72 that were seized from Pavilion contained jewellery - 12,000 pieces.

Mahathir said this week it was hard to prove Rosmah's involvement as her signature, unlike Najib's, was not on any 1MDB documents. Cash found at his house belonged to his political party, he claimed.

The police also found 423 watches worth $19.37m and 234 pairs of sunglasses. The most expensive watch: a Rolex Paul Newman Daytona worth $869,565.

Najib's successor, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, told Reuters last week that investigators have "an nearly perfect" case against the lead suspects of the 1MDB misappropriation scandal.

Since their election loss, Najib and Rosmah have been questioned by anti-graft investigators over allegations that money linked to the state fund ended up in Najib's bank accounts.

USA investigators say at least at least $4.5 billion of the fund's assets were stolen and laundered.
