Watch now: Full-length trailer for Whitney Houston documentary debuts

Whitney documentary claims late singer was abused by cousin Dee Dee Warwick

A new documentary about late singer Whitney Houston alleges that her cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, sexually abused her.

Houston struggled with drug and alcohol dependancy all through her life.

Dee Dee Warwick is the younger sister of soul singer Dionne Warwick and was the niece of Houston's mother. In it, her brother Gary Houston is interviewed about Whitney.

Director Kevin Macdonald told The Hollywood Reporter last week that Houston's memorable rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV played a huge role in his decision to tell her story.

Other moments show Whitney Houston exhibiting some diva-like behavior, particularly when she shades fellow recording artist, Paula Abdul. Warwick died in 2008 at the age of 63 while reportedly struggling with narcotics addiction.

The first official trailer for Whitney has arrived and it's packed with information about the late, great, icon, Whitney Houston. "It made her question her sexual preference", says Jones, who suspects that by marrying Brown and becoming a mother, Houston was trying in vain to emulate a more conventional life.

MacDonald also told Vanity Fair that Dionne Warwick has been informed of the accusation, but that "any negative feelings toward her would be completely wrong". As for why Houston never told her mother: "I think she was ashamed", says Jones. "There was something very disturbed about her, because she was never comfortable in her own skin", he told the publication. "She was lovely", she said, "her heart". Not necessarily in public, but I don't think that was a secret within the music industry. The Grammy winner's friends and family discuss her headline-making romance with Bobby Brown, her "tough" relationship with mom Cissy Houston and the drug abuse that contributed to her death at age 48 in 2012.

The Warwick household has been contacted for remark.

The Whitney Houston documentary, Whitney, won't hit screens until July 6, but judging from the hot-off-the-press trailer, it will be worth the wait.

"Shortly after thinking that, someone did tell me off the record about being told by Whitney about being abused, and it being one of the central reasons behind her self-torture", he continued.
