Warcraft DDoS hacker sentenced to one year in prison

DDoS attacks can also impact Blizzard's bottom line, and since World of Warcraft has been the target of numerous DDoS attacks over the years, it makes sense for the company to crack down on this behavior.

Calin Mateias of Bucharest was sentenced Monday in federal court in Los Angeles.

Calin Mateias hit the World of Warcraft servers between February and September 2010 with a series of DDoS attacks, so much so that the FBI stepped in to help out in an investigation that spanned an entire year.

After the attacks were carried out on the World of Warcraft servers in Europe, thousands of players were not able to play the game. Mateias has reportedly paid $30,000 in damages to Blizzard to retroactively cover the costs of defending against these World of Warcraft DDoS attacks.

DDoS attacks may continue to plague World of Warcraft and other online games moving forward, but attackers can expect Blizzard to pursue similar legal action against them if they are caught. Mateias launched the attack after having disagreements with his raid team about the division of loot and membership. He pleads guilty to one count of intentional damage to a protected computer in February. After such disputes, he would go offline and execute a DDoS attack on the server to crash it so nobody else could play. Just a year ago, the company won a lawsuit against Overwatch cheatmaker Bossland, who was ordered to pay $8,563,600 in restitution. Mateias has been held in federal lockup for the past six months since he was extradited to the States and did not receive any leniency when taking that time spent here into account. Mateias, whose in-game name is Dr Mengele (after the Nazi doctor who committed awful crimes during WW2), has been in custody since his extradition to the U.S. last November and earlier this year pleaded guilty to one count of intentional damage to a protected computer. By the time he's released, he'll actually have been imprisoned for longer than just a year though.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Khaldoun Shobaki of the Cyber & Intellectual Property Crimes Section.
