Valve Drops School Shooting Game - Slog

39;Active Shooter' video game pulled days before release

Fred Guttenberg, whose child Jaimie was also killed in Parkland, tweeted that the Active Shooter game was "one of the worst" things he had seen in the months since his daughter's death, and added, "This company should face the wrath of everyone who cares about school and public safety and it should start immediately".

A controversial video game that simulated a school shooting has been pulled from Steam's online store ahead of its release. The now banned first-person shooter game allowed users to be either a member of S.W.A.T. team or a school shooter themselves.

Its release provoked a wave of criticism - Parkland gun control activist Emma Gonzalez called for Valve to "shut down this shovelware", and parents of the victims followed suit, condemning the game as "disgusting".

On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Valve was pulling the game from its platform.

Over 200,000 also signed an online petition, started by Stephanie Robinett on Change.org.

Ryan Petty, who lost his 14-year-old daughter Alaina in the massacre, accused the game of trying to profit from the "glamorisation of tragedies" in a statement on Facebook.

"We have removed the developer Revived Games and publisher ACID from Steam", stated Valve.

Valve has since removed all titles from both the developer and publisher, citing creator Ata Berdiyev as a "troll" with "a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation" in an interview with Kotaku. "We are not going to do business with people who act like that towards our customers or Valve".

For his part, the troll Valve pointed fingers at for being behind the game, Berdiyev, denies he did it, but claims his friend did.

"Revived Games believes violence and inappropriate actions belong in video games and not real world, and insists that in no event should anyone attempt to recreate or mimic any of the actions, events or situations occurring in the game", it said.

According to Variety, the Active Shooter game had originally been posted on Steam with a disclaimer that read, "Please do not take any of this seriously".
