US Sanctions Hezbollah Leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Deputy Naim Qassem

The sanctions target "Hezbollah's" Shura Council, the party's primary decision-making body.

The US Treasury announced on Wednesday it has imposed sanctions on Hezbollah leadership as well as other individuals and one group, a move it claimed to "disrupt an Iranian-backed terrorist group".

As reported by SPA, the sanctions imposed against the leader of the group Hassan Nasrallah, his Deputy Naim Qassem, Politburo members Muhammad Yazbeck, Hussein Khalil and Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyid.

The US Treasury Department said four other individuals were also sanctioned, as was the group ISIS in the Greater Sahara.

"By targeting "Hezbollah's" Shura Council, our nations collectively rejected the false distinction between a so-called "Political Wing" and "Hezbollah's" global terrorist plotting", said Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin.

As a member state of Terrorist Financing Targeting Centre (TFTC), Kuwait made the decision along with the United States, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, the source added.

"Under the dictates of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), Secretary General and head of the Shura Council Hassan Nasrallah is prolonging the human suffering in Syria, fueling the violence in Iraq and Yemen, putting the Lebanese state and the Lebanese people at risk, and destabilizing the entire region", Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said. Since President Donald Trump announced the policy-shift on Iran, the USA has sanctioned the nation's central bank governor and an Iran-linked currency exchange network.

The latest U.S. sanctions came one day after the Treasury Department slapped sanctions on governor of Iran's Central Bank Valiollah Seif, alleging it had funneled funds to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah is a Shiite militia based in Lebanon, where its political arm recently expanded its influence by making gains in parliamentary elections.

These designations follow U.S President Trump's decision last week to cease US participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and to begin reimposing USA nuclear-related sanctions on the Iranian regime.

Hezbollah, which was founded after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA, has faced off with Israel across the decades, including in a month-long war in 2006.
