Top 3 singers revealed for this season's 'American Idol'

American Idol Recap

American Idol 2018 was joined by music superstar Carrie Underwood tonight, with the Top 5 contestants each performing a song from the American Idol victor herself, as well as joining her on-stage to open the show.

The season's Top 3 contestants who will therefore be competing in next week's finale are Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe.

Contestants Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodard fell short of the votes needed to continue.

Woodard kicked things off with his version of Underwood's "Flat on the Floor".

She started performing when she was young, singing in shows, at church, and at school with her sister and dad. "'Beast-mode.'" Afterwards, Lionel Richie thought Michael succeeded in bringing the sass "on a grand scale".

It's been a whopping 13 years since Carrie Underwood took home the crown as the next American Idol back in 2005. Bryan said she may be Underwood reincarnated but she needs to think beyond that; and Richie says even though the judges made a pact to be tougher this week, he thought Gabby was fabulous. Underwood was impressed with her composure and told Gabby she's farther along with her voice than she had been at Gabby's age.

Gabby belted out and impressed with "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston.

The "American Idol" video crew will be filming all of this for the next episode of the show, so it's important for Clarksville to come out and show its support. The judges later echoed her sentiments, with Perry telling Cade that when he loses the dynamics, his performance becomes "a little shaky sometimes".

"That made me feel pretty", the "Good Girl" singer said, then continued sharing Isaiah's sweet words to her. Perry likes his sense of humor but warns him that some finalists are outperforming him, so he's got to "flap those wings harder to work the crowd".

The second song everyone performed was one dedicated to their mothers, as the episode broadcast on Mother's Day. "I adore her, but we are trying to build a career and we are focused, hardworking and we're not letting it get in the way".
