Sony Now Allows You To Open Up Your Console Without Voiding Warranty

Now, Sony and Nintendo have responded, adjusting their warranty policies to stay on the FTC's good side. They gave the company 30 days to comply. Thanks to the FTC their illegal policy has been changed and using a third party to fix your Nintendo product won't be the basis for losing your warranty.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo and Sony have made efforts to comply with the FTC's rules, but so far, it looks like others are remaining quiet. Choose your fix shop wisely. Sony explained that its free, round-trip shipping policy has always been around, but the previous version of the warranties never specifically stated them. The companies had been telling customers that opening or using third-party fix services would void the warranty, which the FTC took issue with.

Our previous warranties stated that the warranty does not apply if the product is used with a peripheral that is not supplied or licensed by SIE. The only time the warranty will be void is if it's clear that the user has removed the sticker, opened the console and done damage themselves. The absence of the sticker will no longer auto-void the warranty.

What's more, the changes from the Sony Console Warranties comprise; "free return transport for in-warranty consoles from the US and Canada and also free return transport for fixed (or even factory-recertified) consoles to this consumer". The policy always existed, but Sony never included the language in its warranty. The clarification also reaffirms the free return shipping policy for repaired (or factory-recertified) consoles to the customer. So if you used an unlicensed hard drive with your PS4 and it suddenly goes boom for a completely unrelated reason, Sony won't be able to turn around and point the finger at your poor innocent hard drive. However, the warranty won't be covered if you damage the hardware yourself by opening it. You now have more freedom to use third-party products and fix services without fear of a voided warranty.
