Some Google employees are resigning due to involvement with Project Maven

Google A Step Towards Autonomous Killing Machines

Hundreds of academics have urged Google to abandon its work on a U.S. Department of Defense-led drone program codenamed "Project Maven" that is using artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help analyze huge amounts of captured surveillance footage.

Demonstrated that Google was working together with the Defense Department to create artificial intelligence for assessing drone footage as part of an initiative called Project Maven.

The tech news website says "about a dozen" staff working on the project are believed to have walked out, citing concerns ranging from the ethics of the AI programme to the search engine giant's political stance. Obviously, Google's employees weren't happy with the company's dirty dealings in warfare, with nearly 4,000 employees signing a petition asking Google to end its participation in Project Maven. It has been deeply controversial within Google, with employees saying that it jeopardises trust and goes against the company's core beliefs.

In March, several employees at Google said they were outraged about the project, some stating that it was a contradiction of its onetime motto, "Don't be evil".

The more than 400 academics from around the world who signed an open letter published yesterday are supporting Google employees against Project Maven.

"At some point, I realized I could not in good faith recommend anyone join Google, knowing what I knew. Over the last couple of months, I've been less and less impressed with the response and the way people's concerns are being treated and listened to", said one outgoing employee.

It stated: "The private data collected by Google comes with a responsibility not only to use that data to improve its own technologies and expand its business, but also to benefit society".

"Actions speak louder than words, and that's a standard I hold myself to as well", another resigning employee told Gizmodo.

While the technology giant has claimed that the work was "for non-offensive purposes", previous US government memos make it clear the basis of the project is to "enhance military decision-making". I'm not personally responsible for everything they do. "The technology is used to flag images for human review and is meant to save lives and save people from having to do highly tedious work".

"We're actively engaged across the company in a comprehensive discussion of this important topic and also with outside experts, as we continue to develop our policies around the development and use of our machine learning technologies".

So far, Google hasn't commented on the reported resignations.

Others expressed concerns at Google's political moves, like its sponsorship of the Conservative Political Action Conference and its struggle to address internal diversity concerns. "The strongest possible statement I could take against this was to leave".
