Small blast wounds one in jittery Afghan capital Kabul

Heavy clashes in W. Afghanistan city as major Taliban offensive kicks off

Fared Bakhtawer, head of the provincial council, said several security checkpoints in the city of Farah were overrun by Taliban fighters and that an intense gun battle was ongoing. "We are hoping to get control of the fighting in the city by today", Gen. Mohammad Radmanish, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, said in a news conference.

Meanwhile, Abdul Basir Salangi, provincial governor, confirmed heavy fighting in the city.

Taliban leaders had claimed their fighters captured a number of government offices including a local office of the Afghan Intelligence Agency (NDS) during the fighting, a claim Najib Danish, an interior ministry spokesman, denied.

MoD spokesman Gen. Mohamamd Radmanish said the clashes continue in the West and North of the city, nearly 3 kilometers away from the center of the city. They said although the reinforcements have helped the security forces, the street to street fight with the Taliban continued.

Gen. Radmanish further added that additional forces have been deployed to further push the militants away from the outskirts of the city.

One person injured after blast caused by explosive near park in central Kabul, officials say. He said 10 Taliban militants were killed.

The Taliban have seized control of districts across the country, and the two groups have carried out attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul, in recent months that killed scores of people. Security forces were able to rescue around 50 employees stuck in the building during the attack, he added. "But I know the police chief might be in the front line fighting off the Taliban".

He said the attack happened late Monday night in Puli Alim the capital of the province.

"The Taliban are moving very fast, if the government does not take serious and speedy action, the province is going to collapse to Taliban", one resident warned Reuters.
