Simpson leads Players Championship by seven strokes

Woods' 30 on the front nine was his best-ever score on the front nine at TPC Sawgrass, and it was his best nine-hole score since his injury-riddled body started falling apart a half decade ago.

For at least one day, Tiger Woods played like the golfer who used to dominate tournaments.

However, Woods has a little ground to make up to catch up to tournament leader Webb Simpson, who sits alone atop the leaderboard at 15-under for two rounds, which ties the record for the Players Championship. His biggest hiccup was a missed birdie putt just outside five feet on the par-5 16th hole.

If there was any disappointment in his round, Woods said it was getting himself to eight-under for his round through 12 holes but then finishing at seven-under for the day.

While it didn't lead to a birdie, Woods hit one of his best shots of the day at the hard par-3 8, a butter cut 3-iron that finished perfectly pin high and led to a routine par. But the star-studded final-round pairing of Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth could make Mother's Day at TPC Sawgrass well worth the price of admission, especially if the duo performs like they did on moving day.

According to ESPNW, after the round Woods explained, "I finally got off to a good start". Eventually, I'll put all of the pieces together, and today for the most part I did that. "I birdied the first couple of holes and I just kept it rolling from there", Woods told the Golf Channel.

"65 was actually about the highest I could have shot today", Woods said after the round. I think I'm nearly there, hitting the ball better.

"To be 8-under there through 12, realistically I probably could have got a couple more out of it and got to 10 for the day", Woods said.

The Woods vortex will do that to the most seasoned of veteran players, let alone someone like Hughes - who not only had never played with Woods but never met him.

Despite the terrific round, Woods will have trouble putting any pressure on Simpson, who followed up a course-record-tying 63 on Friday with a 68 on Saturday. "I just tried to play it cool and not sound like a total dork".

"It was just incredible", said Spieth, who played with McIlroy and Thomas. "I felt I had better control of hitting it right-to-left and left-to-right".

But Saturday was different, with Woods igniting the early morning gallery, covering his opening nine in 6 under par on his way to a 65, his lowest score to par on Tour in 1,744 days. And how they were rewarded, as Woods quickly got down to business. "All those things that have happened, I'd love to know them if I win tomorrow". "It's just a matter of playing and executing and putting the shots together", he said.

For perspective, the biggest comeback in golf tournament history, according to the research desk at the PGA Tour, is by Paul Lawrie in the 1999 British Open. I was 14 back starting today and anything inside a top 10 is an incredible feat over the weekend from that far back.

Spieth was five under on his round through 11 holes and wondered if he had the low round of the day.
