Science is basically telling you to lie-in this weekend

Sleeping in saves lives

"The results imply that short (weekday) sleep is not a risk factor for mortality if it is combined with a medium or long weekend sleep", researchers wrote in a press release.

Sleep expert Michael Grandner explains it this way: Most people who are considered "short sleepers" are probably just shy of getting seven hours.

Past studies really only looked at sleep patterns during the week, and recommended that people change their sleeping habits gradually over time.

Those aged 65 or under who slept five hours or less each day were around 25 % more likely to die than those who snoozed through six to seven hours.

Scientists Say You Should Sleep in Past Noon on the Weekends

Torbjörn Åkerstedt, a professor and director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University told CNN he was quite surprised by the findings on sleep during off days.

Not having a sufficient amount of sleep obviously isn't ideal, as it's been linked to having a higher risk of developing conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The individuals were restricted to 4.67 hours of sleep for each 20-hour time period, which is the equivalent to sleeping around 5.5 hours in a 24-hour day.

The study wasn't flawless and had limitations, including study subjects not being observed directly and self-reporting their sleep habits. For over-65s, no link was found between the hours slept and the risk of death. "It's a fundamental part of our biology, like breathing". If you don't get enough sleep, you wake up with that sleep pressure and start the day with a higher need for it.

"I think people like the idea that you can compensate for lost sleep", Åkerstedt said.
