Rise in number of schools asking for mental health support for children

Gov. Kim Reynolds joins state legislators mental-health service advocates families of suicide victims and others who gathered in the Capitol building rotunda Thursday to applaud the enactment and signing of legislation to build a comprehensive mental-he

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, which runs the CAMHS service for the county, said the higher number of referrals were as a result of making the system simpler.

Almost a third of referrals from schools to CAMHS, for Trusts across England who were able to provide the information, over the last three years were declined treatment as they did not meet the criteria for support.

The former teacher and education officer said: "This is an issue that as a county councillor I have been raising for many years".

Worryingly, the majority of these requests come from primary schools, which the NSPCC say do not have the funding or services to support their students.

The NSPCC found schools in England seeking professional help for pupils from NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services - CAMHS - made 123,713 referrals since 2014/15.

Peter Wanless, Chief Executive of the NSPCC said: "Our research shows schools are increasingly referring children for specialist mental health treatment, often when the child is at crisis point. It is vital the government urgently provides more funding to Childline and help children who don't have access to support elsewhere".

There has been a 10-fold increase in the number of young people being referred by Northamptonshire schools for mental health treatment in the past four years, with more than half of referrals made concerning primary school children.

If we want to break the silence around mental health struggles, it would begin with managers communicating that it is okay to talk about it.

"But we also need to change at a societal level". The CIPD/Simplyhealth Health and Wellbeing at Work report also revealed that mental ill-health was now the main cause of long-term absence in more than a fifth of United Kingdom organisations (22 per cent) and that stress-related absence had increased over the previous year in more than a third (37 per cent) of businesses.

"We are also asking for well-being days to be provided to public sector workers as part of reducing the pressure on those who work hardest to look after us".

"All businesses, not just ours, need to create awareness amongst senior leadership teams in particular, so they can understand and identify the signs of ill mental health within their teams at an early stage, before the natural stresses of work potentially make it an unbearable situation".

A government spokeswoman said it was investing an additional £300m to provide quicker support to children.

Alfie's story follows a number of high-profile mental health-themed plots including Lily's self-harm and Scott's depression and suicide attempt, on which the soap has been advised by organisations such as Samaritans and Mind. "This will improve links between up to 1,200 schools and their local specialist mental health service".
