Rauner Proposes Bringing Back Death Penalty, Other Gun Measures, in Amendatory Veto

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner a Republican has proposed bringing back the death penalty in his state for mass murderers and those who kill police officers

Gov. Bruce Rauner dropped a bombshell Monday, saying he wants to re-instate the death penalty for mass murders and anyone who kills a law enforcement agent. Throughout a information convention, the Republican governor stated individuals who kill a police officer "deserve to surrender their life", the Chicago Solar-Instances reported.

On reinstating the death penalty for cop killers and mass murders, Rauner said: "Few crimes are more heinous than purposeful killings of children and peacekeepers, ". It would apply to offenders 18 and over that prosecutors charge with killing peace officers or two or more people without lawful justification.

Rauner's proposal was a part of his amendatory veto to a gun management invoice, which additionally included a 72-hour ready interval on all firearm purchases, based on a Rauner Fb publish.

However, the proposal states that "If a person is justly convicted beyond all doubt of a crime for which death is deserved by a carefully crafted definition, then the only sentence objectively consistent with the demands of justice is death".

As for the death penalty, Rauner says a jury would have to prove "beyond all doubt" that an alleged shooter is guilty before they could be sent to death row.

"Doing so is in large part why we had so many problems and overturned convictions", Cullerton said. Death penalty opponents point to the 20 death row inmates who have been exonerated in the past three decades as proof of problem here in IL. He told media that Rauner, "hijacked [his] bill and put politics ahead of policy".

Free up local revenue to hire resource officers and mental health workers to help intervene and prevent student violence before it starts.

In a tweet, Rauner, a Republican, stated reinstating the loss of life penalty "reveals we now have no tolerance for such atrocities in our state".

In a statement, Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady called called Rauner's changes appropriate. "The Governor's action today recognizes the need for a multi-pronged approach to dealing with deadly assaults".

Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed Monday reestablishing the loss of life penalty in IL for sure violent criminals.

Democrats have introduced several proposals to curb gun violence - in response not only to mass shootings elsewhere in the US but also because of the February 13 fatal shooting in downtown Chicago of police Cmdr. State Senator Kwame Raoul, who was the original sponsor of the death penalty ban, said the governor's proposal has no chance of passing in Springfield. IL has seen the harm that a flawed death penalty system can do, all while adding nothing to our public safety.
