Poor People's Campaign launches days of protests around US

The campaign takes its name from an effort organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.in the late 1960s. The gathering focused on the needs of women, people with disabilities, children living in poverty and LGBT community members. "We want Governor Dayton to veto the bill".

Protesters from a group calling itself "The Poor People's Campaign" were accused of unlawfully assembling on Senate and Sumter streets in Columbia, Monday.

Beginning in 2013, the Moral Monday movement, led by the Rev. William J. Barber II, forged the blueprint for weekly demonstrations followed by civil disobedience.

"No justice, no peace" were among the chants that came from what police estimated were 50 protesters.

Reports by police from seven state capitols and Washington, D.C., showed more than 200 people had been arrested or cited during the first day of the so-called Poor People's Campaign.

Police said the unlawful assembly took place after a peaceful assembly at the South Carolina State House.

The goal is to use civil disobedience and "voter mobilization" to revive the civil rights campaign of 1960s, according to a statement issued hours before the event. "People across the country are standing up against the lie of scarcity".

At issue are several policies they believe are heartless, if not cruel, to poor people.

The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival says it's "uniting tens of thousands of people across the country to challenge the evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nation's distorted morality".

At the end of the 40 days, on June 23, the advocates from Kansas and other participating states say they will rally again at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
