Pompeo: US to help North Korea economy if it gives up nuke

President Trump says summit with North Korea scheduled for June 12 in Singapore

The US will assist North Korea with its economy if Pyongyang gets rid of its nuclear weapons, its secretary of state has said.

"We had good conversations about the histories of our two nations, the challenges that we have had between us", Pompeo said during Friday's news conference with South Korea's visiting foreign minister, Kang Kyung-wha. Has China told Kim to calm down, talk with President Trump, and if he doesn't, he will lose the backing of China?

Trump had announced he would meet with Kim in Singapore on June 12, two days before the USA leader's 72nd birthday. They also stressed that Kim will have to agree to sweeping concessions up front, unlike in previous nuclear deals with Pyongyang that were phased in and ultimately fell apart.

Pompeo said Trump is in a unique position. For knowledge of our military capabilities will have certainly influenced North Korea's recent change of approach.

President Trump is mercurial, to be sure, calling Kim "Little Rocket Man" one day and praising him as a leader deserving of respect another. "Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!"

Until an agreement is reached, Washington plans on maintaining pressure through sanctions, which have made it harder for North Korea to trade with China, its main ally.

Bolton appeared to widen the scope of US demands, insisting that the USA also wanted to put elimination of North Korea's chemical and biological weapons and other issues on the table.

Mike Pence said, "What Kim Jong Un has said publicly and in discussions is that he is prepared, he is prepared to negotiate to achieve complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

But it is a matter of fierce debate among diplomats and Korea experts whether Kim would surrender his nuclear arsenal.

But he stressed that this would require a "robust verification" programme by the U.S. and other nations. To this, Kim will probably respond that securing any prisoner's release is hard, given North Korea's "independent" judiciary; but he will present himself as a humanitarian willing to do what he can to help.

President Donald Trump welcomed home three Korean-Americans early Thursday morning at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after they were released from North Korea on Wednesday.

But the negotiations have repeatedly broken down, often amid recriminations on both sides that the other was not complying with the terms.

Administration officials say the goal is to make sure the government can no longer threaten the US or its allies.

USA government aid to North is not likely, Pompeo and Bolton said.

"I think that we have a shared vision for what we hope". If the Shangri-La hotel is chosen for the Trump-Kim meeting, much of the security preparations might already be in place.

The U.S. and North Korea have been hostile adversaries for almost seven decades, since the Korean War, with Pyongyang isolated from most nations.

Pompeo told Fox News, "This will be Americans coming in...not the USA taxpayer...to help build out the energy grid".

Pompeo said the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula would require a "robust verification" program by the United States and other countries.
