Oscar-winning film editor Anne V. Coates passes away

Anne V Coates editor of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ ‘Out of Sight’ and ‘The Elephant Man’ dies

On Lawrence of Arabia, Coates and director David Lean worked with some 33 miles of footage to craft the almost four-hour epic, which contains one of the most famous "match" cuts in the history of cinema - a sequence that transitions from a shot of Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence blowing out a match to the desert sun rising from the horizon. A name we all should remember is that of Anne V. Coates, the absolute legend of cinema whose career as an editor spanned 63 years and 54 films. She received an honorary Academy Award in 2016. "'Fifty Shades of Grey, ' Jamie Dornan?" she said as she accepted her award.

Coates won a competitive Oscar for 1962's "Lawrence of Arabia" and was nominated four other times, for "Becket", "The Elephant Man", "In the Line of Fire", and Soderbergh's "Out of Sight".

Her more recent credits include The Golden Compass, Extraordinary Measures and 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey, for which she was credited alongside Lisa Gunning and Debra-Neil Fisher.

Her marriage to director Douglas Hickox ended in divorce.

Coates, who moved to Los Angeles in 1986 while she was working on the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Raw Deal (1986), was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the British Empire) in 2003. After watching it with the hard cut on the action of blowing out the match, Coates and Lean agreed no crossfade would ever be as effective as that hard cut. "Things like hairdressing didn't really interest me". I found the most interesting job a woman could do, other than acting, was editing. She was on a tight postproduction schedule because the film was to be shown to Queen Elizabeth before it was released to the public.

Born in Reigate, England, Coates first became a fan of film after a high school field trip to see an adaptation of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" that starred Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. She is survived by her sons, Anthony and James, both directors, and her daughter, Emma, a film editor.

The niece of British film mogul J. Arthur Rank, she tried to break into the industry in the 1950s as a director but soon turned to editing, a line of work much more open for women.

Coates worked on more than 50 films, including "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965), Lumet's "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974), "What About Bob?".

Filmmaker Edgar Wright tweeted his condolences Wednesday, noting the famed match cut, but also making a plea to "cheer" for the "sublime editing in the (pre) love scene in 'Out Of Sight'". (1991), Richard Attenborough's "Chaplin" (1992), Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich" (2000) and "Unfaithful" (2002), directed by Adrian Lyne.
