Oklahoma gov vetoes bill allowing adults to carry guns without a permit

Mary Fallin

Senate Bill 1212 has been sitting on the desk of Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin for seven days now.

The bill was supported by the NRA and several GOP candidates in the state, Fox News reported.

In vetoing the legislation, Fallin said in her veto message to lawmakers that the bill, in her opinion, still violates the high court ruling and a similar subsequent ruling by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals.

"I believe the firearms laws we now have in place are effective, appropriate and minimal", she said. The Tulsa Regional Chamber urged a veto because the bill "impairs the right of businesses and property owners to implement safeguards to prohibit untrained individuals with no background checks from carrying guns into their establishment".

Senate Bill 1140, authored by Sen.

"After many hours of consideration and investigation of Oklahoma's current practice, I note the aggressive efforts that have been made since I have been governor and the substantial progress made in finding more temporary and permanent placements for deserving children, reducing by 21 percent the number of children in state custody". I support the right to bear arms and own a pistol, a rifle, and a shotgun. "The new law will bring more adoption services to the state and allow crucial faith-based agencies to continue their decades-long tradition of caring for Oklahoma's most vulnerable children".

The hot-button issue of gun rights energizes Republican voters, particularly those in Republican primaries, said Trebor Worthen, a Republican political strategist.

Governor Fallin released a statement saying she believe the firearms laws that Oklahoma now has are effective and appropriate.

The Household Equality Council, which advocates for LGBTQ households, mentioned in an announcement that the Oklahoma regulation targets the homosexual group and encourages religious-based adoption companies "to discriminate on the idea of their perception that LGBTQ individuals shouldn't be elevating youngsters". "Especially in more rural areas".

Gov. Mary Fallin said yes Friday to Ten Commandments monuments and religion-based adoptions but no to looser gun laws. In 2015, she vetoed legislation that restricted businesses from banning guns at parks, fairgrounds and recreational areas, a veto that remained in place.

However Fallin's motion drew help from Oklahoma's Catholic bishops.

"We hope that other governors, most immediately Kansas Gov. Colyer, will not follow Oklahoma's example and will put the needs of the child first", Coyler said.
