North Korea says it will dismantle nuke test site May 23-25

Summit Is Set: Trump-Kim To Meet June 12 In Singapore

Technically the United States and North Korea are still at war - a stop-gap armistice ended the brutal three year war between the two countries in 1953 and around 30,000 USA troops remain in neighboring South Korea.

Pompeo's comments come ahead of a planned June 12 meeting in Singapore between North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, the first such meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Last week, US intelligence said the North Koreans had started pulling cables from the tunnels at their nuclear test site - a first step toward closing them down, CBS News' national security correspondent David Martin reported.

"This will be...private sector Americans...coming in to help build out the energy grid that needs enormous amounts of electricity in North Korea", Pompeo claimed in an interview on "Fox News Sunday", adding that the USA would also help to bring investments in the agricultural sector in order to solve food issue of North Korea under the condition of the full denuclearization of the country.

"The next few weeks will be critical, requiring air-tight coordination between our two countries", Kang said.

Pompeo said he had a "good" conversation with North Koreans and did his best to convey the USA message to them.

Trump announces when he'll meet North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

North Korea's state news agency criticized the Japanese government Saturday for urging a resolution to the issue of Pyongyang's abductions of Japanese nationals, claiming that the issue has already been resolved.

North Korea's reference to such activity is created to communicate that even without underground testing, the country intends to maintain its nuclear arsenal and be a "responsible" steward of those weapons at the same time, said Andrea Berger, a senior analyst at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies.

The pair, he said, talked "about how it is he wishes to proceed and if he's prepared, in exchange for the assurances that we're ready to provide him, if he is prepared to fully denuclearize".

"There's a danger here of the peace track moving more quickly than the denuclearization track", warned Abraham Denmark, an Asia expert and former senior USA defense official.

"He does follow the western press", Pompeo said.

In a joint news conference with South Korea's top diplomat, he offered a glimpse of what U.S.

Kim, who has notably clashed with the USA over the issue of nuclear weapons, has reportedly expressed his willingness to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

"If we can hold to those three principles, this might work", Rice said at Stanford's Hoover Institution.

But despite the optimism of that moment, all efforts to limit North Korea's nuclear program have, to date, failed.

Amid concerns North Korea will demand the US withdraw its troops from neighboring South Korea, Ms Kang emphasised the US military presence there must be "a matter for the US-ROK alliance first and foremost", using an acronym for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.

He said a massive inspection and monitoring regime would be required to ensure the North's compliance.
