A company spokesman says the filing by these attorneys general promises costly and protracted litigation.

Slattery III and a bipartisan group of attorneys general have filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharmaceuticals for their alleged unlawful marketing of OxyContin and other drugs that have caused and prolonged the opioid epidemic in the state.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, left, stands next to Rep. Eric Bedingfield, whose son died previous year of a drug overdose, on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at his offices in Columbia, S.C. Wilson on Tuesday announced the state had sued Purdue Pharma, accusing the maker of OxyContin and other opioid drugs of violating South Carolina's Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The Texas lawsuit accuses Purdue Pharma of using a marketing campaign to convince doctors and consumers that their opioid drugs are effective for treating long term pain and have a low risk of addiction.

Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt announced a lawsuit Tuesday against pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma.

Connecticut-based Purdue denies the claims. "Purdue initiated the expansion of the opioid market that created the opioid crisis", Stenehjem said. If necessary, and depending on how the settlement discussions progress, North Dakota will amend its complaint to include additional manufacturers or bring separate suits against other manufacturers or distributors, according to Stenehjem.

"As detailed in the complaint I filed today, Purdue Pharma repeatedly deceived prescribers and patients in its pursuit of profits, and far too many North Carolinians lost their loved ones as a results", Stein said in a statement.

National law firm Robins Kaplan filed the lawsuits on behalf of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, as well as the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and the Menominee Indian Tribe.
