New Zealand Rugby Not Happy With Brad Shields' England Selection

Loose forward Brad Shields

Seven uncapped players have been included and they are Ben Earl (Saracens), Jonny Hill (Exeter Chiefs), Dan Robson (Wasps), Brad Shields (Hurricanes), Ben Spencer (Saracens), Cameron Redpath (Sale Sharks) and Jack Willis (Wasps).

Under the terms of his contract, NZR did not have to release Shields to play in South Africa - it requires him to be available exclusively for New Zealand teams.

The red-hot Hurricanes recorded their ninth straight Super Rugby win with a bonus point 36-15 victory over the Blues at Eden Park on Friday, extending the home side's winless streak against New Zealand opposition to 16 matches.

In a statement, NZ Rugby said it had made an exception for the Hurricanes captain, who had sought a release in conjunction with the England's Rugby Football Union.

"We have taken some time to carefully work through the complexities of this request, to ensure that we gave appropriate consideration to his specific circumstances". In the end, we are happy with the terms of his temporary release.

During last year's November Internationals, Shields turned down a call-up to the All Blacks.

Speaking to TVNZ, he said: 'We're disappointed to have found ourselves in the position to receive a release request from English Rugby, but we have tried to put the athlete at the centre of our decision making and do the right thing by Brad.

His potential selection for England while still playing in New Zealand has not been universally welcomed with World Cup winning coach Clive Woodward among those criticising the move.

While the Hurricanes star-studded backline was thought likely to be the key to the match, it was their forwards and especially the hard-working Evans, prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen and England recruit Brad Shields who played decisive roles.

Eddie Jones has named a 34-man squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa which will see England take on the Springboks in three Tests throughout June.
