Moscow says it won't supply advanced air defenses to Syria

Russian Su-25 aircraft trail the colours of the national flag over Red Square to mark the anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in 1945

The Kremlin said on May 11 that a suggestion by Chechen lawmakers to change the constitution to allow President Vladimir Putin to serve another presidential term when his current term ends in 2024 is not on Putin's agenda.

The Syrian armed forces have "all that is needed", he reportedly added. The airstrikes were retaliation for an alleged chemical weapons attack by Syria.

"We're not discussing any deliveries of advanced new systems" to Syria, Vladimir Kozhin said in comments published on Friday by the pro-government Izvestia newspaper.

When asked about the proposal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: "This is a constitutional question".

Moscow says it won't supply advanced air defenses to Syria

Previously, Israeli officials had expressed concerns over the potential supply of Russian S-300s to Syria, with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatening to destroy the systems if Damascus used them against Tel Aviv.

The possibility of missile supplies to Assad along with its military foray into Syria itself has helped Moscow boost its Middle East clout. with Putin hosting everyone from Netanyahu to the presidents of Turkey and Iran and the Saudi king. Israel has carried out scores of air strikes against suspected shipments.

Its deployment in Syria would give the country's air defenses a substantial boost against frequent reported Israeli attacks on regime and Iranian targets in the country. Syrian air-defense systems managed to intercept more than half of the missiles.

Russian Federation is not in talks with the Syrian government about supplying advanced S-300 missile defense systems to Syria in an effort to bolster the war-torn Arab nation's defensive capabilities, a top Kremlin aide says.
