Malaysia bars more officials from leaving country amid corruption probe

The Prime Minister said that he looked forward to working with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to further strengthen the India-Malaysia strategic partnership. Mahathir himself was investigated under the law before he led his four-party alliance to a stunning victory in Wednesday's election, ousting the long-ruling coalition.

"No deal", said Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in the article based on an interview conducted by video link for The Wall Street Journal CEO Council in Tokyo. He said he needed time to fix the country's financial problems and that he expects to continue to play a role even after he steps down.

Mahathir has vowed that "heads must fall" in government bodies suspected of colluding in corruption, and on Monday the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission - which had targeted critics of Najib - resigned.

But his party said that the prime minister's office had informed them an official committee that issues pardons - and would sign off on his release - would now be meeting on Wednesday, without explaining why. The 70-year-old Anwar is still serving a five-year jail term after he was found guilty on a sodomy charge in 2015.

He said he had come under "intense" pressure in the lead-up to the election for adding extra flights and refusing to fire the chairman of a subsidiary who had expressed support for Mahathir.

On May 10, Mahathir was sworn in as the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia at the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur. Two photos provided with the report and reviewed by Reuters showed a van with the department's logo and a shopping trolley filled with orange boxes.

Najib is accused of misappropriating billions of dollars through his pet project state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), and making deposits into his private accounts worth up to $1 billion.

In an astonishing U-turn previous year, Anwar shook hands with Mahathir and agreed to join forces to oust scandal-tainted Najib.

1MDB is now under worldwide probes in at least six countries, including Switzerland and Singapore, over charges of money laundering and bribery.

Mahathir on Saturday stopped Najib from leaving the country, and sacked the attorney general who had cleared him of involvement in a multi-billion-dollar corruption scandal.

"We will divulge the evidences and facts to the appropriate authorities at the right time", AirAsia said in a statement.

Najib denies any wrongdoing in connection with losses at the fund.

"If there is no case, we don't go for detention without trial", he said.

The airline's boss, Tony Fernandes, apologized Sunday after offering a glowing endorsement of Najib days before the election, flying with him on an AirAsia plane painted in the blue colors of the leader's coalition.
