Chuck Knox, one of the few coaches to take three different National Football League teams to the playoffs twice, died this weekend in hospice care.

Knox was the first coach to take the Seahawks to the playoffs.

Chuck Knox, left, shakes hands with then-Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren after the franchise's last game at the Kingdome in December 1999.

Besides the Seahawks, the coach nicknamed "Ground Chuck" took the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills to the playoffs and was three times named National Football League coach of the year.

Knox's granddaughter, Lee Ann, confirmed his death Sunday morning on Twitter. Knox started his coaching career as an offensive lin coach with the Jets, later working with the Lions, the Rams and the Bills.

"Chuck Knox was the best coach I ever had", Hall of Fame Rams guard Tom Mack told the Los Angeles Time.

Knox left the Bills after the 1982 season after failing to come to terms on a new deal with Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson. Knox's Super Bowl dreams ended there, as the Seahawks lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles Raiders.

"He established a winning culture and a legacy that will never be forgotten, being the only coach to lead the Rams to five consecutive double-digit-win seasons", the Rams said of Knox in a statement. They won their first playoff game, defeating the Raiders 13-7. In 2005, Knox was inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in recognition of his achievements with the franchise. "But at the same time, he really was a players' coach", Largent continued.

Known as "Ground Chuck" for his emphasis on his team's running game, Knox coached the Seahawks from 1983-91. One of Knox's most memorable phrases was "what you do speaks so well, no need to hear what you say".

According to the Seahawks, Knox spent the past few years battling dementia, and he was in hospice care when he died.
