JUST IN: APC postpones LG congress in Imo State

Chief Rochas Okorocha

Suspected hoodlums in Imo state, have set the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state on fire.

Moshood said that the suspects were trailed and arrested on Saturday by the Inspector-General of Police Special Tactical Squad at Seredib Hotel in Wuse II, Abuja.

The Nigeria Police Force said it arrested four suspects for criminal conspiracy, forgery, stealing and unlawful possession of electoral materials meant for the aborted APC ward congress in Imo.

"There is only one centre in Akure South, and there are 27 elected delegates from the ward including five delegates from local government to elect government executives", Mr Adetimehin said.

Multiple reports said the fire started around 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2018, during a heavy downpour which made people around the area run to safety. All the suspects will be arraigned in court on completion of investigation.

Okorocha lauded the APC National Working Committee led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun for postponing the local government congress.

The state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, accused other APC leaders in the state, including Uzodinma, of manipulating the process.

In Ifedore, the lawmaker representing Ifedore/ Idanre federal constituency, Bamidele Baderinwa, said the local government congress was held at the APC secretariat in the local government.

Okorocha has been locked in a battle with Opposition elements within the Imo APC who reportedly hijacked the results of Imo APC Congress that took place last week Saturday.

Meanwhile, Naija News recalls that Ekiti, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers, states APC have attracted disagreements and grievances from its members so far.

After the meeting, the APC delegation had initially declined to speak with State House Correspondents, but changed their mind when they saw Okorocha telling the correspondents that a new date for the congresses would be announced by the party.

In a statement by his spokesman, Sam Onwuemeodo, the governor said the fire may not be unconnected the frustrations of some of the party men over the disputed ward congress in the state.

The acting chairman of the party in the state, Ade Adetimehin, however, said that the congresses went "smoothly and rancour free and peaceful".
