Iran 'will negotiate' or 'something will happen,' Trump says

Barack Obama and President Donald Trump

"By taking a step that violates the (Iran deal), President Trump has taken a drastic step that will increase the possibility of Iran resuming its pursuit of a nuclear weapon and make it much more hard to reach a diplomatic agreement to constrain North Korea's nuclear program", Sen. The President further characterized the deal as a financial boon to the Iranian regime and therefore a support of terrorism.

According to an Élysée Palace readout of the call, Macron urged Iran to "engage in a wide discussion with all parties involved" on topics including the country's nuclear program after 2025, its ballistic missiles and its actions across the Middle East.

Earlier Wednesday, France's Foreign Secretary Jean-Yves Le Drian had attempted to calm tensions by insisting the Iran deal was "not dead". "This is a break with worldwide commitment and France deeply regrets this decision".

The United States buys no Iranian oil, while the other signatories of the agreement, Russia, Britain, France and Germany, are opposed to ending the agreement, and may continue to buy Iranian crude.

That may yet prove hard.

Netanyahu gave a televised address minutes after Trump's announcement on Tuesday to express his strong backing for the "historic" decision, announced in a speech in Washington that reflected numerous Israeli premier's positions.

Trump's decision means Iran's government must now decide whether to follow the US and withdraw or try to salvage what's left of the deal.

"I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal", Trump stated at the White House on Tuesday.

Shortly after the ban, Trump began subjecting the nuclear deal to a death by a thousand cuts. Now the USA wants Iran to reduce its regional presence and missile program, he added. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of lying about its compliance with the terms of the deal, though United Nations inspectors determined that Iran was living up to its commitments.

Donald Trump says that's unacceptable. Iran did not respond to a CNN request for comment.

We will stay in the agreement.

In other words, Iran is likely to demand further concessions on sanctions and economic commitments from the remaining parties to the deal, which also includes China and Russian Federation, in return for continued cooperation.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini hasvowed that Europe will stick with its commitments under the deal, acting within its security interests and protecting its economic investments. "Any nation that helps Iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the United States".

The Times editors and others predict a boomerang blow to the North Korean summit from Trump's decision.

The 2015 agreement, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and included Germany, France and Britain, had lifted most US and global economic sanctions against Iran. While Iranian officials, including the parliament speaker, say they hope Europe will work with them to preserve the deal, many are pessimistic.

Israel will now be closely watching Iran's response to Trump's decision, particularly over uranium enrichment, which was constrained under the deal.

By bowing out of the agreement, President Trump argues that he will now be able to restructure both sanctions against Iran and a new deal to restrict the country's access to nuclear weapons.

On Wednesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei described Trump's address as "shallow" and warned that Iran would not be intimidated by the US. There were several lies in his speech.

"I'd prefer not talk about a hypothetical case like that", Mattis said, but "everything that we are doing, and you can see it with Korea, we're diplomatically led on this".

The leaders of the UK, Germany and France, say as a result of the deal "the world is a safer place".

I want to make only one fairly obvious point that perhaps isn't made often enough. "If there's not definite guarantee, the #JCPOA can not continue".

In the joint statement, the three leaders said that they took note of Mr Trump's decision "with regret and concern".
