Indonesia police shoot dead three men after attack on Riau HQ

Another Police Station Attacked in Indonesia

Indonesian police have shot dead four men armed with swords after they attacked a police station on the island of Sumatra.

The group slammed a minivan into a gate and then attacked officers with swords.

The Riau Police succeeded on Wednesday in stopping an attempted terrorist attack on their headquarters in Pekanbaru, the National Police have announced.

The attack is the latest in a spate of attacks in the country.

One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said.

Riau Police Chief Inspector General Nandan said a group of suspected militants crashed a vehicle into the gate of the headquarters around 9 a.m.

Just two days ago, on Monday, 10 people were injured in a suicide bombing as two motorcycles drove into a checkpoint at a police station in the Indonesian port city of Surabaya.

Separately, Sunarto said police are still searching for more attackers.

Indonesia's security forces have arrested hundreds of militants during a sustained crackdown that smashed some networks, and most recent attacks have been low-level and targeted domestic security forces. All three incidents involved the children of the three families, who knew each other and studied the Quran together, police said Tuesday.

State news agency Antara said two journalists who had been at the police headquarters were also hurt in the attack.

Last year, a suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta killed three police officers.

Wasisto said the driver has been apprehended and was now being detained at Riau Police Precinct.
