INDIANA PRIMARY ELECTIONS: Voters head to the polls

Each tried to outdo the other proving his fealty to President Donald Trump.

Or, he told the crowd, you can send us Mike Braun. Joe Donnelly in a state where Trump won by 19 percentage points in the fall - and where Trump is set to visit Thursday.

Henry Kober, a truck driver from Syracuse, Indiana, didn't intend to go inside to listen to Trump.

The president and the vice president will be looking to unite Hoosier Republicans after what has been called "a very nasty" Republican Senate race.

The candidates also highlight a shift in the Republican Party to embrace more populist, nativist and protectionist candidates skeptical of immigration and free trade - a seismic change from the party's traditional alliance of social conservatives and free-marketeers.

The winners of Republican Senate primaries in West Virginia, Indiana and OH prevailed in multimillion-dollar contests to prove themselves the most willing to take on the Washington elite. Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) in the Republican presidential primary.

Voters seemed relieved the bitter TV ads would end for a while. "Remember Alabama. Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey!" According to CNN's projection, though, Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia's attorney general, defeated Blankenship to win the party's nomination.

"It's hard to tell from the various ads who to vote for, but Rokita's a name I know".

"I thought it was great", said one woman at the event.

The results could be seen as a victory for Trump, who had urged Republican voters to reject Blankenship as doomed to lose to incumbent Democratic Sen. While Gibbons has played the Trump card, however, Renacci snagged the president's endorsement. It's expected to be one of the most competitive Senate campaigns.

By midday Tuesday, the trio of Republican candidates seeking the nomination for a U.S. Senate run were eager for round two, a November battle against Democrat incumbent Sen. "I don't really care who supports Trump".

"If President Trump is willing to go out and define some of these opponents, it's extremely helpful to those campaigns", said Barry Bennett, a former Trump campaign aide.

Rokita and Messer relentlessly attacked Braun for his history of voting in Democratic primaries in a county where the party until recently held a firm grip on local offices.

Manchin said Wednesday he would vote for Trump's nominee to lead the CIA, Gina Haspel, despite widespread opposition among Democrats. Seven candidates sought the Republican seat and six for the Democrat spot. Democrats are already responding in kind, with an online ad using clips of Rokita blasting Braun's statehouse votes for a gas tax hike.

In a phone conversation with The Herald last month, he said the main reason he threw his hat in the ring was because after building a career and a business outside of the political world, he learned many things he believes would be applicable to the U.S. Senator role.

"All of these Democrats have gotten elected in red states, which by definition means they have a brand at least somewhat independent of the national Democratic Party", said Republican pollster Whit Ayres, who is advising a group that supports Republican Senate candidates.

According to Politico, Braun's effort was powered by almost $6 million of his own money that he either loaned or gave to his campaign. Trump spent about $65 million of his own funds during his campaign.

"They don't stick up for the Christians", Faulkner said.
