IGP Vs Senate - Police Vow to Challenge Resolution in Court

Police IG 'Not Fit To Remain In Office' – Senate Spokesman

The IGP definitely should not have any problem with an invitation for him to tell the Senate what he and his men are doing to stop the killings as well as their challenges and needs in doing this. The release is speculative and not supported by any fact.

"The Senate resolves to declare the IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria".

On the measures taken so far to tackling the killings, the ACP revealed that normalcy has been restored in most of the affected areas, while hundreds of suspects directly responsible for the dastardly acts have been arrested and were being prosecuted.

"The Senate's action to cover the appearance of the IGP on national television is against national security, unconventional and it negates global security practice".

On the other hand, all Nigerians are aware of the bad blood that exists between Senate and police following the arrest and arraignment in court of Senator Dino Melaye [APC, Kogi West] over alleged supply of weapons to thugs.

He however said he had approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to decide whether the IGP must always appear in person each time he was invited to appear before the National Assembly despite his powers of delegation on official matters involving the police force. One wonders why security strategies of the Force to tackle the killings in the affected States would be discussed on National Television.

"The Police Force owes no apology to any individual or groups in its effort to ensure preservation of law and order, supremacy of the law of the land, and make sure that all Nigerians are subject to the same law, no matter what their positions are in the society", he said. A statement spurned by the Nigeria Police and some lawyers, like Falana who interpreted section 67 sub section 2 in favor of Idris.

The Red Chamber said, "We noted the response issued by one Jimoh Moshood on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, following yesterday's resolution of the legislative chamber on the continued refusal of the IGP to honour the invitation for him to come and explain what the police are doing to halt the spate of killings across the country".

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Itse Sagay, on Thursday, said he is never impressed by the Senate of the 8th National Assembly, adding that the upper chamber "is probably the worst we have ever had since the return to civilian rule".

Moshood disclosed that the IGP has appeared 10 times before the Senate on different issues of national importance since he assumed duty in June 2016.

The Force insists on due process of the law and once again implores the Senate not to whip-up sentiments or resort to self-help but to allow the rule of law and justice to prevail on the whole matter.
