HTC Exodus Coming Later This Year, Powered by Blockchain

A new report published today revealed that HTC is also building a Android powered blockchain phone called the HTC Exodus. It'll sport a universal wallet and an onboard secure hardware enclave, TheNextWeb reported. Ultimately, HTC says that each Exodus will act as a node for the bitcoin and ethereum blockchains - so that every phone increases the overall size and scope of the network.

At launch, HTC will support Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity and other "underlying protocols".

So far, only Sirin Labs has been able to come very close to the launch of the world's first blockchain phone.

He added, "We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months, we'll be announcing many more exciting partnerships together".

HTC is harnessing the expertise of Phil Chen, co-founder of VIVE. Sirin Labs announced a $999 Dollars blockchain phone previous year, a device reportedly being made by Foxconn. Chen said that he believes that a blockchain-powered smartphone might inspire a new wave of decentralized systems, in the same way that the availability of computers once paved the way for the makings of the internet. While the Exodus phone maintains a crypto-connection, its important to understand the basics of blockchain outside of cryptocurrencies to see how revolutionary this device could be.

Huawei is also reportedly considering the technology for one of its future devices.

In addition to cryptocurrency manipulation, blockchain is touted for its ability to offer both better security and user experience by incorporating cold wallet storage - offline cryptocurrency storage - directly into the phone.

Of course, as TNW points out, these types of features can already be installed on basically any smartphone already on the market.

At its most basic level, blockchain is a digital ledger - it's commonly used as a record of cryptocurrencies and transactions made using that currency.
