Here's how Google will handle your data under GDPR

Future Business

To be clear, Google hasn't changed its services or permissions, it's just making them easier to understand.

In addition, Google is letting it users opt out of data collecting in the future. You'll continue to have granular control over the data you share with us when you use our services, but with clearer explanations.

Users will also be able to view or delete any data collected, including search and location history, from Google services using My Activity.

Business users will be happy to learn that Google's Download Your Data tool is improving and expanding.

Google is also rolling out a proposition called Family Link that will let parents create a Google Account for their kids and set "digital ground rules" on any Android device, like approving or blocking apps. The new features should make service-to-service data transfers encouraged by GDPR a lot less cumbersome.

Rules for parental consent and tweaked children's tools have also been rolled out. Users can choose to permanently delete specific activities, or days of activity that they do not want connected to their account.

The updated policy is already available to read and we'll be emailing all of our users about it individually. Our policy requires consent for cookies that are used for measurement purposes and consent for the use of personal data for personalised ads - for instance if you have remarketing tags on your pages.

Despite the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) being widely publicised, it appears that many organisations in the sector are not yet prepared to meet its requirements.

"Our customer data platform is helping the world's most innovative companies gain better control over their data in real time to ensure GDPR readiness and to drive smarter, more impactful engagement with their consumers", said Mark Herrmann, chief product officer at SessionM, in a statement.

Under existing European Union law, Google already requires publishers and advertisers to get consent from their end users for the use of our advertising services on their websites.

We're not asking publishers to get consent for our users.

Google also provides GDPR advice for publishers on its DoubleClick for Publishers help forum. "We're asking them to get consent from their users, on their sites, for use of ad tech on their sites - which could be one of our advertising products, or someone else's".
