Gotham: Fox Renews Batman Prequel Series for Fifth and Final Season

Gotham Season 5 Will be the Series Last

THR's Lesley Goldberg tweeted that per his sources, it appears that Gotham may still have some legs left for a final bout allowing the series to get syndicated thanks to its 100 episode benchmark.

Gotham is coming to an end, but it'll be a proper sendoff. But here's the rub: This will be the show's final season and will focus on Bruce Wayne's transformation into the caped crusader. Per Deadline, the series will premiere midseason for the first time, but it doesn't really fit with the direction they're going and will be headed into a final season next year. Fox has officially given the Batman prequel a fifth season order.

The O.C.'s Ben McKenzie stars in Gotham as a younger version of James Gordon, who would later go on to become Commissioner Gordon. Season 2 hovered around 4 million viewers, Season 3 dipped to 3 million, and the most recent fourth season was stuck between 2 and 3 million viewers throughout its season, striking a new series low.

News of Gotham ending doesn't come as that much of a surprise as the ratings weren't all that good for a network show. Indeed, syndication can be a lucrative venture, and no doubt Warner Bros.

The renewals came as FOX also canceled several of its fan-favorite dramas like "Lucifer" and "The Exorcist", and laid waste to nearly all of its single-camera comedies, including "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" (which has since been saved by NBC), "Last Man on Earth", and "The Mick". The reason behind this was because Fox doesn't technically own Gotham - or Lethal Weapon, for that matter - and was looking to clean up its line-up because of its deal with the National Football League and Major League Football; this meant getting rid of the often-referred-to "bubble" shows that failed to bring in viewers.
