France condemns U.S. move to re-impose Iran sanctions

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of a landmark deal curbing Iran's nuclear program and reintroducing sanctions on the Islamic republic and those who trade with it.

"We feel that the extraterritoriality of their sanction measures are unacceptable", he told the French daily Le Parisien.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia may fast-track development of their own nuclear weapons if the Iran deal collapses as a result of the US withdrawal, former European Union and US Agency for International Development (USAID) consultant Paolo von Schirach told Sputnik.

"The prime minister raised the potential impact of US sanctions on those firms which are now conducting business in Iran", her spokeswoman said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as quoted by local media, accused the United States of undermining the worldwide order by its decision to exit the UN Security Council-endorsed Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that governs Iran's nuclear program.

The telephone call covered other global issues with Mrs May congratulating the USA president on the safe return of three Americans who had been held in prison in North Korea. While some US allies such as Japan and South Korea will likely opt not to anger their Big Brother and stop importing oil from Iran, others, such as China and India, will continue buying Iranian crude as they are not dependent on the United States for their national security.

"The Prime Minister and the president condemned the Iranian rocket attacks against Israeli forces earlier this week, and strongly supported Israel's right to defend itself against Iranian aggression".

The two leaders also looked forward to Mr Trump's visit to the United Kingdom in July, Downing Street said.
