Eyes trained on Gulf as storms develop near Florida

An area of disturbed weather in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico has a 40 percent chance of developing into a tropical system over the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday afternoon.

Where could it go?

The Gulf system that will help bring in moisture will stall out through midweek, keeping rain and storms around each day from Tuesday through next weekend. Wind shear will be very strong and water temperatures over the central Gulf are not warm enough yet for organized tropical systems.

Up to seven inches of rain could fall this week in total on Florida's east coast, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center. Clouds overnight will keep lows mild, in the low 70s, while highs remain below average in the mid- to low 80s.

Our rain this week may get a name!

If the system impacts north Florida it could bring a lot of rain over the peninsula but also to southeast Alabama, Purdy said. IF it becomes a tropical storm, it would be the first of the 2018 Atlantic season, and would be named "Alberto".

More widespread showers and storms started moving in across South Florida on Sunday morning, especially in the lower Florida Keys. This serves as a good reminder that hurricane season is only 19 days away.
