European Leaders Trying to Keep Iran Nuclear Deal Alive

The FO also reiterated its support for the Iran deal - which had limited Iran's nuclear programme so that the latter could not produce a bomb, in return for the lifting of most of the USA and worldwide sanctions against it.

European leaders will speak with Iranian officials in the coming days about ways to keep the agreement afloat without the United States and with the resumption of U.S sanctions on Tehran.

Trump announced Tuesday that the United States would pull out of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sparking an global outcry.

Reacting to Trump's decision, Iranian lawmakers lit a paper USA flag on fire in parliament on May 9, shouting, "Death to America!"

Proponents of the deal have said those time limits were meant to encourage more discussion with Iran in the future that could eventually address other concerns.

Mattis risks being isolated by Trump's more hardline coterie of advisors, including national security advisor John Bolton, an Iraq War-era hawk who has advocated military action in both Iran and North Korea.

Iran is one of the world's largest oil producers, and the export of oil and gas is worth billions of dollars each year.

President Trump also pointed to Iran's actions in countries including Syria and Yemen.

Elsewhere, shortly after Trump's Tuesday announcement, the European Union's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, urged solidarity in the rest of the worldwide community outside the United States.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said: "The US has announced that it doesn't respect its commitments".

The administration said it would re-impose sanctions on Iran immediately but allow grace periods for businesses to wind down activity.

"Iran will not violate the nuclear deal, but if the United States withdraws from the deal, they will surely regret it".

The European Union said it would remain committed to the deal and would ensure sanctions on Iran remain lifted, as long as Tehran meets its commitments.

Booker's decision to support the agreement, which relaxed economic sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear program, came after he was urged to oppose the deal by the pro-Israel community and by Gov.

"According to the IAEA, Iran continues to abide by the restrictions set out by the JCPOA, in line with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons".

On Tuesday, Trump fulfilled a campaign by declaring that the U.S.is leaving the deal.

In addition, Larijani said, "Europe and important countries like Russian Federation and China" could fill the "vacuum" and help the deal continue.

The statement called on the USA to ensure that the structure of the deal stay intact and "avoid taking action which obstructs its full implementation by all other parties to the deal".
