The thundershowers accompanied with a squall and gusty winds also likely to hit isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha with wind speed reaching 50-70 kmph. The disruption was caused after a tree fell on the tracks of the route between Rajiv Chowk to RK Ashram metro stations.

The MeT department had earlier today warned that 26 districts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness the harsh change in weather.

Almost 50 flights were affected after operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport came to a halt for almost 40 minutes due to a storm in the national capital on Sunday. Thunderstorm over hill states and its subsequent effect on plains in North India is due to a new western disturbance.

When the Metro services resumed, the trains plied at halting speed. Private airline Vistara's Srinagar-Delhi flight was diverted to Amritsar because of the weather, it said in a tweet.

Metro movement at the Noida Dwaraka line was stalled for 30 minutes due to bad weather conditions, said reports.

Dust storms were also reported in areas of East Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.

In its forecast, the department said rain and thunderstorm are very likely at a few places over western Uttar Pradesh and at many places over eastern parts of the state.

A total of 31 domestic flights and six worldwide flights were delayed after the storm hit Delhi early evening. Strong wind, accompanied by dust, followed by rain, lashed the city bringing a sudden change in the weather.

While the maximum temperature in Chandrapur shot up to 47.3 degree Celsius on Friday, mercury may hit 43 degree Celsius with heat waves spread across the National Capital region in mid of May. A dust-storm has also been predicted over West Madhya Pradesh.
