Colorado girl seriously injured in bear attack outside home

An autopsy has been conducted on the 127-pound two-year-old male bear that attacked Kimberly Cyr outside of her East Orchard Mesa home early Sunday morning

Authorities in Grand Junction have killed the bear they believe attacked a 5-year-old girl outside her home early Sunday morning.

The attack took place in East Orchard Mesa, a small community near the Colorado River and about 250 miles (400 km) west of Denver.

The mother told wildlife officers the girl went outside after hearing noises she thought could have been made by a dog. The mother screamed at the bear, which then let her daughter go.

She told CPW officers the bear dropped the girl after she began screaming at the animal.

A Colorado Parks and Wildlife official said the unnamed mum "exemplified the love and courage of what it takes to be a mother". Wildlife officers in Mesa County are now searching for the bear to make sure no one else is attacked.

Wildlife officials stress black bears are not out to hunt people but that conflicts, including attacks, can happen once bears get access to easy, calorie-rich human food and return for more.

The 5-year-old Colorado girl who was attacked by a bear at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday had been camping alone in the yard.

In 911 recordings released Monday, the girl's father calmly says "she's just missing a chunk out of her back, a couple spots in her leg". "She's hurting pretty good", he said during the call.

"We intend to catch this bear", said an agency spokesman, Mike Porras. "No injuries to her brain or chest organs or abdominal organs and no fractures".

"Based on bear behavior, it's possible this bear will come back to the area", Porras said.

"Fortunately, she had no life-threatening injuries", Breaux said.

"The goal is to trap the bear, and if we do, we are going to put that bear down", Porras said.

Parks and Wildlife officials remind residents to secure trash, keep pet food inside and immediately report any bear sightings in this neighborhood, or any residential area.
