China's Didi apologizes after killing of passenger sparks safety fears

A Volkswagen model sits on display at an auto show in Beijing in April 2008

Didi said it was looking for a male driver named Liu Zhenhua to assist with the investigation and was offering a reward of up to 1 million yuan ($157,629) to anyone with information on him.

The action came after a 21-year-old woman who booked a ride through Didi was killed in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou on May 6, according to police. Didi is the largest ride-hailing firm in the world by the number of rides. The post also provided Liu's photograph, birthplace, identification number and cellphone number.

While Didi didn't mention the murder on its microblog, the company said the incident involved a driver who used his father's Didi account to pick up the passenger.

As she got into the auto, she texted a colleague saying she had "bumped into a pervert", Thepaper.cn reported. Police say they are seeking a 27-year-old suspect who was captured on surveillance footage abandoning the vehicle. "Luckily, I'm not sitting in the front seat".
