CDC apologizes after poppy seed muffin tweet with ticks goes viral

Fleas and ticks can spread serious illnesses to dogs and cats, including Lyme disease, which can be fatal to our four-legged friends.

But the CDC's tick-laden muffin presented an entirely distinct problem for Twitter users, left to forever associate the delicious dots on poppyseed muffins with disease-ridden ticks. "Learn how to prevent tick bites". The caption, however, suggested that something wasn't quite right.

Local experts say with the sudden change in temperatures that you may already be at risk of exposure to ticks.

"Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed", the tweet reads.

Upon closer inspection, it seems that not all of the poppy seeds on the muffin are what they appear to be.

CDC officials say the tweet was not meant to offend anyone but to raise awareness and protect you during the summer months.

The attached images from last week showed a poppyseed muffin, that paragon of American breakfast pastries, with no fewer than five blood-sucking arachnids hidden on top.

Some people think that the CDC intentionally chose this freaky imagery in order to grab people's attention and get across an important message about ticks.

The CDC responded by saying, "Sorry we ticked some of you off".

The tweet went viral with over 1,900 retweets.
