Carapaz wins 7th stage as Yates maintains Giro d'Italia lead

Reigning champion Tom Dumoulin is second in the overall standings 16 seconds off the pace

MONTEVERGINE, Italy (AP) - Richard Carapaz pulled off a superb final attack to win the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday, while British rider Simon Yates remained in the overall lead after the second mountain finish of the race. Thibaut Pinot was third.

Team Sky rider Froome, aiming to win a third successive grand tour, crashed on a slippery hairpin but managed to finish and sits ninth overall, a minute and 10 seconds behind Yates.

Simon Yates cemented his position as overall leader of the Giro d'Italia by winning the ninth stage on Sunday but it was a bad day for British compatriot Chris Froome, who lost more than a minute in the general classification.

Mitchelton rider Yates, wearing the pink jersey, crossed just ahead of France's Thibaut Pinto and Colombian Esteban Chaves at 2,135 metres altitude.

Yates now has a 32-second lead over Chaves in the overall standings, with defending champion Tom Dumoulin 38 seconds back.

Four-time Tour de France victor Froome had been ninth, 1 minute and 10 seconds behind Yates.

Speaking after the 225km stage from Pesco Sannita, Yates said: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage victor and Maglia Rosa, Simon Yates, said: "I realise how big it is to win my first stage with the Maglia Rosa".
