By the Numbers: Cavs' Draft Lottery

None of those trinkets worked - at least not well enough to help the Magic land a superstar.

Hoping to cash in on some decades-old luck and nostalgia, Orlando Magic co-founder Pat Williams will have a blast from the past in his possession as he keeps a talking Lil' Penny doll with him during the National Basketball Association draft lottery Tuesday night.

Williams will sit in the room where the pingpong balls are drawn.

There are 1,000 four-digit combinations (technically 1,001, but one gets thrown out) divided amongst the 14 lottery teams in random order.

The Orlando Magic, a franchise with a history (thought not recent) of good fortune in the lottery, will use a remnant of past lottery wins in hopes of beating the odds at Tuesday's event.

Magic co-founder Pat Williams will make sure he has a good-luck charm with him in Chicago: a Lil' Penny doll.

"We put the finest minds we've got on this one and this is what they came up with", Williams told the Sentinel.

"It's our version of a lucky penny". The team will have an 8.4 percent chance of receiving the seventh pick and a 0.4 percent chance of receiving the eighth pick.

The Celtics swung a 2017 draft night trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that not only netted them Jayson Tatum, but also set them up to receive the Los Angeles Lakers' 2018 first-round pick if it falls between No. 2 and No. 5.

The Magic haven't won the lottery since turning 2004's No. 1 pick into Dwight Howard. So far, only Oladipo has developed into an All-Star, but Oladipo reached All-Star status as a member of the Indiana Pacers.
