Bolton warns economic sanctions possible for business with Iran

Mike Pompeo, Trump's secretary of state, said on Sunday wealth created in Iran under the terms of the nuclear deal "drove Iranian malign activity" in the region.

John Bolton, who is Trump's national security advisor, said that Tehran's military had exploited the easing of pressure on the Iranian economy to meddle in conflicts across the Middle East in the last three years.

In a Fox News interview in January, Bolton said the United States should take steps such as increasing economic pressure on Iran and providing support to opponents of the government.

While he has committed to remaining in the nuclear agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of a supplemental deal on Iran during a recent visit to Washington. "He makes the decisions, and the advice I give him is between us".

"I don't believe we will ever be able to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again", James Clapper, former director of national intelligence, said on "Fareed Zakaria's Global Positioning System".

The exit drew swift criticism from the deal's other signatories, including USA allies in Europe who'd tried for weeks to convince Trump to remain on board and said they plan to keep their commitment to the deal. "So I think at the moment there is some feeling in Europe that they're really surprised that we got out of it and really surprised at the imposition of strict sanctions".

Nationwide Safety Adviser John Bolton additionally commented on the U.S.'s imminent transfer of its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, telling ABC Information' Chief World Affairs Correspondent and "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz that relocating the embassy to Jerusalem will make peace "simpler" as a result of it acknowledges the "actuality" that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Quite the contrary, it provided cover for Iran to continue its efforts.

"The policy of the administration is to make sure that Iran never gets close to deliverable nuclear weapons", he added.

Although most analysts believe the U.S. withdrawal has effectively scuppered the agreement, Iran's foreign minister talked up the prospects of its survival on Sunday while visiting China, another of the signatories.

"Europeans are going to face the effective US sanctions, already are, really, because much of what they would like to sell to Iran involves USA technology, for which the licenses will not be available", the national security adviser said.

The administration says the lifting of sanctions as part of the nuclear pact had allowed Iran to build up its military, with Trump claiming on Saturday that Tehran's defense spending had risen by 40 percent since 2015.

When pressed whether the U.S.is prepared to go against companies from its allies, Pompeo said the sanctions in place are "very clear about what the requirements are".

"We are not going it alone", Bolton replied.

He said that more Americans from the private sector to help build the energy grid and to work with them to develop infrastructure. "They've now fired missiles into Israel", Pompeo said. "Those are the kinds of things that if we get what it is the president has demanded, the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of North Korea that the American people will offer in spades".
