Bills retire Thurman Thomas' number The Buffalo Bills announced a huge honor for running back Thurman Thomas Wednesday

It was only a matter of time before the team made it official with Thurman Thomas.

The Buffalo Bills are going to retire the jersey of one of their legendary players.

That's because the team announced on Wednesday that they are retiring his number 34 jersey. 34 jersey will join Jim Kelly's No. 12 and Bruce Smith's No. 78 as the only jerseys the Bills have retired. In the first three seasons of his career, Thomas had a total of 12 games with at least 100 yards rushing.

Thomas ranks 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 12,074 yards.

"When I got drafted by the Bills, I was like 'Buffalo, New York!' I'm like, 'OK, I know it's cold, OJ Simpson, you know." said Thomas in the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary Four Falls of Buffalo.

He earned five Pro Bowl selections and helped the Bills secure four straight Super Bowl appearances. Thomas received Heisman votes in 1985 and 1987; the honor went to Auburn's Bo Jackson and Notre Dame's Tim Brown, respectively.

When it comes to retiring numbers in the National Football League, every franchise handles it differently. And to make it that much more exciting, the ceremony will come during the October 29 Monday night game against the New England Patriots.

The former Bills running back is both a Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
