Astronomers find fastest-growing black hole known in space

Researchers have spotted the fastest-growing black hole ever found - and have seen the (thankfully) distant devourer consume a mass equivalent to Earth's sun every two days. Apparently, what baffled the scientists was that this black hole expands at such an accelerated pace that, in accordance to the current theories, it must have about 20 billion times the mass of our Sun.

Luckily for us, this black hole is far, far away-the only reason we even know it exists is because astronomers picked up on its red-shifted light from roughly 12 billion years ago, which took light-years to reach Earth. "It would appear as an incredibly bright pin-point star that would nearly wash out all of the stars in the sky", said Dr.

Christian Wolf at the Australian National University (ANU) said that no one has an idea as to how the object grew to be so big so fast in the Universe's early days.

There is a supermassive black hole at the centre of our own galaxy, but compared to this one, it is a lightweight.

"During the birth of the universe, some really massive seeds were created that these black holes then formed around".

If black holes were already a total mystery to scientists, they now face a much greater mystery.

This makes the newfound giant black hole the fastest-growing quasar in the known universe. However, the SkyMapper telescope at the ANU Siding Spring Observatory was able to detect the ultraviolet light emitted by the quasar. "If this monster were in the center of the Milky Way it would probably make life on Earth impossible because of the large number of X-rays it emanates", the astronomer said. He has worked as a journalist in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and joined the Times in March 2018.

"There's a big mystery about how these supermassive black holes form, because we don't understand how something could get that big that quickly; our normal theories don't work", she says.

Such large and rapidly growing black holes are extremely rare, with the latest spotted by the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite as it measured tiny motions of celestial objects. Its presence was confirmed by the spectrograph on the ANU 2.3-meter telescope. It's interesting to see such formations came into being when the universe was so young, so they are now wondering if there are others that look the same. "The hunt is on to find even faster-growing black holes", Wolf said. Previously, astronomers had already found black holes much heavier than they should be due to their age.
