Apple slapped with class-action lawsuit over faulty MacBook Keyboards

Apple hit with class action lawsuit over the faulty keyboard design of its MacBook and MacBook Pros

Apple needs to make rounds to the court.

Apple's silence over issues related to its allegedly flawed MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards just got a whole lot more deafening.

Apple is facing a class action lawsuit over claims the hardware maker knew that the "butterfly" keyboard on its MacBook range was defective, but rolled out the device anyway.

The complaint included multiple claims of an issue with the design of Apple's butterfly keyboard mechanism included in MacBook variants manufactured since 2015 and on MacBook Pro models since 2016. Apple has advertised this keyboard as being more responsive and comfortable than its predecessor.

AppleInsider says it collected its data from "assorted Apple Genius Bars in the U.S." that it has worked with for several years, as well as Apple-authorized third-party fix shops. It's not acceptable for computers that cost $1,299 and more to have keyboards that break because of small amounts of dust.

"The keyboard features our second-generation butterfly mechanism - providing four times more key stability than a traditional scissor mechanism, along with greater comfort and responsiveness", the company wrote on its website. The average price of replacing a malfunctioning keyboard is somewhere near $700, too much to ask for but that's what the users had to face.

In the time since The Outline first published its piece, AppleInsider conducted an investigation of Genius Bar locations and third-party fix shops showing that 2016 MacBook Pro keyboards were failing twice as much as older models. If this is indeed the case, Apple appears to have neglected to address the issue properly. The full class action complaint is embedded below.

We'll have to wait and see what Apple's response is, but the keyboard controversy threatens to put people off buying a new MacBook or MacBook Pro - not something Apple CEO Tim Cook and his colleagues will be pleased about. But of course, they weren't open about it. It says that after collecting service data for the first year of release for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 MacBook Pros, it concluded that - excluding Touch Bar failures - the 2016 MacBook Pro keyboard has been failing its users twice as often in the first year of use as the 2014 or 2015 MacBook Pro models.

The lawsuit asks Apple be compelled to "provide adequate disclosure of the defective nature of the MacBooks" and "return to Plaintiffs and Class members all costs attributable to remedying or replacing defective MacBook laptops, including but not limited to economic losses from the purchase of replacement laptops".
