Alfie Evans funeral: how the fight for his life unfolded

Alfie's parents had campaigned to save his life

Alfie, who had a degenerative neurological condition, died last month after doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital withdrew life-support treatment.

Flowers, pictures and messages left outside Everton's Goodison Park as the cortege of Alfie Evans goes past the ground in Liverpool, England.

People gathered outside Everton's Goodison Park stadium as the procession passed following a private funeral service.

Tom and Kate Evan have been battling to have their son transferred to Italy for medical treatment.

His parents had fought a bitter battle with the hospital treating him, and the High Court, to allow them to take him overseas for further medical treatment.

Announcing the news of his death on 28 April, his parents said: "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30am".

Toy soldiers and the Everton club motif were nestled beside his tiny coffin, while the lead two hearses carried floral wreaths spelling out the words "Warrior", "Our Hero", "Son", "Nephew", "Grandson" and "Blue".

Crowds began gathering hours before the procession was due to go past this morning and by the time it arrived there were hundreds of people by the side of the road.

Evans was born on May 9, 2016, and was first taken to hospital in December of that year after suffering seizures. They wanted to take Alfie to the Vatican's Bambino Gesu paediatric hospital, but the courts ruled that it was not in his best interest.

British law states that parents "cannot demand a particular treatment to be continued where the burdens of the treatment clearly outweigh the benefits for the child".
