82 women walk Cannes red carpet in protest

The number of women on the steps, 82, represents the women who have directed films that have been honoured up by Cannes Film Festival, compared to 1,866, the number of men who have done the same.

Their signatures hit the page just two days after 82 female film industry figures staged a red-carpet protest at the world-famous French film festival, demanding an end to gender imbalance in the film industry.

On the carpet, Kristen dished on what it was like to be apart of the women's march that was held during the festival the day before.

Organizers said the event was orchestrated by the Time's Up movement and the French movement known as 5020×2020 to show "how hard it is still to climb the social and professional ladder" for women. Watching from the front row was this year's nine-member jury, including President Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay and Lea Seydoux. Jerome Paillard Executive Director, Marche Du Film Festival, Cannes Film Market stated that Indian Pavilion is a very important tool to help connecting the worldwide European and worldwide community of films.

Joining Fremaux in signing the pledge was Director's Fortnight director Paolo Moretti and Critics' Week director Charles Tesson, both of whom made promises to improve gender equality in Cannes' biggest sidebars.

'We stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination to change and progress'.

Fremaux has repeatedly insisted that the festival chooses its films purely based on quality.

In 2018 only three out of the 21 directors in the competition for the Palme d'Or are women.

Monday's pledge also calls for the festival to compile statistics breaking down the gender of filmmakers and major crew members for all films submitted to Cannes.

One woman, Varda, has won the Honorary Palme d'Or, which has been presented seven times over the last 17 years.

After the signing, filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski noted it was Blanchett's birthday, and attendees serenaded the actress with a rendition of "Happy Birthday".
