Woolworths hit with technical outage, checkouts unable to process sales

A nationwide technical outage has shut down Woolworths registers forcing stores to close their doors

Pictures taken from stores in Sydney and Melbourne show customers waiting at registers with trolleys full of food and groups of abandoned carts.

EARLIER: A NATIONAL technical outage has halted trading at Woolworths stores, causing chaos for shoppers as their trolleys bank up and stores are shut down.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store".

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer from Brisbane wrote on Twitter.

Stores temporarily closed in response to the outage.

Sky News has reported that customers were told to leave and come back in an hour.

"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon". Staff said every register in every store nation wide has shut down.

Shortly after 4pm, the issue began affecting all registers across the country.

Woolworths stores across the country have had to shut down registers and are unable to make sales.

The ABC reached out to Woolworths for comment.
