'Consequences' for Syria strike: Russia

Lebanese's Hezbollah resistance movement also sharply condemned the barrage of US, French and British air strikes on Syria, praising the Arab neighbor's air defense for confronting the missile attacks.

A year ago, 59 United States cruise missiles had been fired at a regime base in northern Syria in response to a sarin gas attack that had killed more than 80 civilians.

While some people are cautious about laying the blame for the chemical attack on Douma at Syrian President Bashar Assad's door, Britain, France and the USA believe there is no other plausible culprit - citing a growing body of evidence against the regime.

Worldwide law banned chemical weapons in 1925.

Trump calls the two countries those "most responsible for supporting, equipping and financing the criminal Assad regime".

The strikes, a joint operation between the US, United Kingdom and France, targeted three locations associated with the production and storage of chemical weapons: a scientific research center; a storage center for sarin and its precursor components; and a chemical weapons storage facility and command post, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford.

Despite severely damaging the infrastructure with the strikes, McKenzie said the Pentagon would not rule out that the Assad government still had capability to use such weapons again. "Right now, this is a one-time shot, created to set back the Syrian war machine's ability to produce chemical weapons".

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defences, in several areas of Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

Sources inside the Pentagon and in the White House indicated days of disagreement over what exactly the US should do in response to the latest atrocities out of the war-torn Middle Eastern country. After that attack, President Donald Trump promised to exact a "big price" on the Assad regime.

She also called on Russian Federation to "honor its commitment" to ensure the Assad regime gives up chemical weapons. Assad has vehemently denied launching the chemical attack.

The action was in response to an alleged chemical attack on civilians in the town of Douma last week.

The Russian military said that 103 cruise missiles were fired including Tomahawk missiles, but that Syrian air defense systems managed to intercept 71. "We don't want to get into a fight with them, they don't want to get in a fight with us", he said.

It added that "we have every reason to believe that the attack on Syria was meant to hamper the work of the OPCW inspectors".

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Joseph Dunford said in a news conference Friday that the three target areas included a scientific research center located in Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs and a nearby storage facility with chemical weapons equipment and an "important" command post.

Syria strikes - How world reacted?

An emergency session of the UN Security Council, called by Russian Federation, met at 4pm today.

White said the USA does not seek conflict with Syria but "cannot allow such grievous violations of worldwide law" and attacks on innocent Syrians.

In a statement on Saturday, he reiterated the Russian view that an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma that killed dozens of civilians was fake: "Russian military experts, having visited the place of the alleged incident, did not find any traces of the use of chlorine or other poisonous substances".

But soon after, Secretary of Defense James Mattis gave a different assessment. It appears the Pentagon got its way, since Friday's strikes were apparently only twice as intense as Trump's "pinprick" retaliation against Assad a year ago.
